College Gift Guide: 5 Useful Student Apartment-Sized Appliances

What do you get the person who has nothing? Striking out alone for the first time in their lives, college students are in need of pretty much everything. These student apartment-sized appliances (sometimes advertised as condo or apartment appliances) are great gifts college students will actually use.

  1. Mini-Fridge/Microfridge

The college staple. The minifridge enables starving students to horde dining hall meals, fast food leftovers, and their hydrating beverage of choice. Microfridges are a step above, offering more space than a minifridge at roughly half the size of a full-size refrigerator. For students moving out of the dorm and into their first place, the microfridge is an essential of student apartment-sized appliances.

  1. Portable Washing Machine

Your first apartment probably didn’t have an en-suite washer and dryer. The same goes for most students. They’re either stuck using the laundromat or a communal washing machine in the building’s dank basement (and not the fun kind of dank.) So a portable washing machine is much-appreciated.

  1. Portable Dishwasher

Condo or apartment appliances often leave something to be desired. In the case of the dishwasher, the item is usually non-existent. In fact, as a lifelong renter, I’ve never once had the privilege of a dishwasher in my place. But if there’s any appliance college students really, really need, it’s a dishwasher. Have you seen the average student’s kitchen sink? Not a pleasant sight.

  1. Portable Air Conditioner

Air conditioning is another privilege most young renters live without. Depending on where you live, this can range from inconvenient to downright inhumane. Unfortunately, many landlords don’t let tenants install window air conditioner units (they’re unsightly and can be unsafe if not properly installed.) When fans alone don’t get the job done, the a portable air conditioner is the next best alternative.

  1. Hand Vacuum

When I was a student, I practically lived on my couch. It served as my bed, workstation, and dining area. Yes, it’s gross, and no, I’m not the only person who does this. It’s not unheard of for college students to literally sublet their couch to a classmate desperate for someplace to live. So do your student a favour and get them a hand vacuum they can use to keep their couch crumb-free.
